Young at Heart Project aims to provide the magic
and therapeutic benefits of live professional musical
entertainment for senior populations confined by age and
infirmity in convalescent and residential care facilities
throughout the Central Coast and South Bay Communities.
How Young at Heart Project Began
The inspiration for Young at Heart Project came to founder Sean
Seman while he was performing an impromptu concert at a rest home.
An elderly man, who had not spoken for two years, erupted into song
during the performance, much to the amazement of the hospital staff.
Having witnessed first hand the positive effects of
musical performance for seniors, Seman became serious about
bringing lively and uplifting entertainment to seniors
when his aunt moved into a residential care facility. He
created Young at Heart Project to enrich the lives of
seniors.
Established in 1985, Young at Heart Project, a
non-profit Corporation, depends on support from
foundations, individuals, businesses and concerned
community leaders who wish to improve the quality of
life for seniors in convalescent care.
Guest artists are chosen from the ranks of professional musicians currently
appearing in venues from San Francisco to Monterey. Young at Heart Project performers
must not only demonstrate a high degree of technical competency, but also
a desire to provide a vibrant and ever changing repertoire specific to
senior audiences. By validating the past through the performance of music
from the 20s, 30s and 40s - music popular when the seniors were young
- Young at Heart Project musicians create a special bond that enhances and
benefits the emotional and physical well-being of seniors. The most important
ingredient of any performance is the element of love; love of music, audience
and life itself.
Current Musicians include:
- National Fiddle Champion
- Best New Artist, Canadian Musician Association
- Members of Santa Cruz and San Jose Opera and Women's Philharmonic
- Recording artists and Bay Area headliners
